People who want to protect their property from thieves and avoid having to make a claim on their homeowner insurance can start by being very careful about the information they reveal online.

A recent report warns that many people may inadvertently give too much information to would-be thieves if they discuss vacation plans or provide other similar information on social networking websites.

A report by Legal & General recently cited a recent survey showing that 38 percent of people who use popular online social media websites had announced their vacation plans, while 33 percent had posted updates on their pages saying that they were away for the weekend.

The report noted that this can be particularly risky because many people have online "friends" on these websites that they may not actually know very well. For example, 13 percent of Facebook.com users acknowledged accepting friend requests from people they had not taken the time to check on.

Another warning sign from the survey found that 17 percent of people who visit these networking websites had reported seeing other people's home addresses online.

In the current economy, consumers already have more than enough reasons to do what they can to keep thieves away from their homes, especially in light of the extra work involved in replacing lost goods and filling out homeowner insurance claims.
